Modern Street HEMI® Shootout Adds Hurricane Engines for 2026

For almost two decades, the Modern Street HEMI® Shootout has been the leading Mopar®-focused racing series, often showcasing the quickest Gen 3 HEMI engine-powered vehicles in the world. When the 2026 MSHS season begins, the legendary HEMI engine will be joined by the new twin-turbocharged Hurricane straight six engine, which effectively adds the new Dodge Charger SIXPACK and the 2025-2026 Ram 1500 to the list of eligible vehicles.

While the Modern Street HEMI Shootout is obviously dominated by the V8 engine for which the series is named, this is not the first time that something other than a HEMI engine is included in the series. The Dodge Challenger, Charger and Magnum, along with the Chrysler 300 with the 3.6-liter Pentastar® V6 have been eligible to compete in the MSHS since 2012, but vehicles powered by that engine are relatively rare in the series.

“Since the creation of the Modern Street HEMI Shootout in 2010, we have focused on real, fair, fun and inclusive competition. Adding the Hurricane as an approved powerplant for the series falls in line with that mission, bring the newest and best Mopar technology and power to the dragstrip. We’ve allowed the Pentastar LX/LC/LD-powered lineup in the series since 2012 and while it wasn’t heavily participated, we know the Hurricane is a different animal that will hit the ground running on day 1,” said Modern Street HEMI Shootout founder and boss Dan VanHorn. “We welcome this added twist to the Gen 3 HEMI focused series. We feel it will give us years of growth and healthy like-minded Mopar enthusiasm at the track.”

Pentastar-powered vehicles are rare, but they do have a presence in the HEMI engine-focused series. Dave Engstrand and his V6-powered Dodge Challenger won the 13.50 class championship in 2025, but Pentastar racers have an uphill battle to compete with the V8 racers. Not only is the Pentastar down quite a bit on power in stock form, there is far less aftermarket support for Pentastar owners who want to go very fast. Pentastar vehicles in the 11- and 12-second quarter-mile bracket exist, but they are incredibly rare.

On the other hand, the high-output Hurricane-powered Ram 1500s with just basic piggyback tuning are already running in the 11s, while the tuned standard output trucks are in the 12s. Also, even though deliveries have just begun, the new Dodge Charger SIXPACK has proven that it will run the low-12s in stock form and with piggyback tuning, some owners are in the deep 11s. When full tuning is unlocked, we can expect much bigger jumps in performance from both the Ram trucks and Dodge Chargers with the Hurricane engines and it seems to be all-but-certain that the new Charger SIXPACK with minor upgrades will have 10-second potential.

In short, the Hurricane-powered Dodge Charger SIXPACK and Ram 1500 are competitive with the HEMI engine-powered vehicles in stock form, so they are more likely to fit into the crowd of V8-powered vehicles in the Modern Street HEMI Shootout series.

For those who are unfamiliar with the Modern Street HEMI Shootout series, here is a quick rundown of how things work.

When you register for a Modern Street HEMI Shootout event, your entry gets you into two racing classes. The MSHS has heads-up, bracket and index classes, and most racers pick one of the time-based index classes and the bracket class. This will likely be the best choice for anyone looking to go MSHS racing with their Hurricane-powered Dodge Charger SIXPACK or Ram 1500, as the heads-up classes are for the quickest cars in the series. Below, we have included a list of the classes for 2026, the schedule for 2026 and the 2026 sponsors, who all play a key role in the continued success of the series.
